History

Founded by the late Reverend Leon H. Sullivan in 1964, OIC Philadelphia's legacy is built on a strong foundation of empowerment, excellence, and growth. We are committed to creating a brighter future for our community, one individual at a time.

1964

OIC is founded by Reverend Leon H. Sullivan, attracting 8,000 people on its opening day seeking job opportunities.

1967

Groundbreaking for Progress Plaza, made possible through a successful 10-36 crowdfunding campaign.

1989

The Hospitality Training Institute opens its doors, thanks to the financial support of the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority, providing individuals with onboarding careers in the hospitality and culinary fields.

2001

On April 24th, The Reverend Leon H. Sullivan passes away, leaving behind a legacy of empowerment and community upliftment.

2002

The Leon H. Sullivan Foundation is established to carry forward Reverend Sullivan's vision of positive change.

2017

OIC launches a green energy jobs training program in collaboration with PECO, promoting sustainable careers in the green energy sector.

2022

The Board of Directors selects Sheila Ireland as President & CEO, bringing dynamic leadership to the organization.

2023

Rep. Dwight Evans requests $23.7 million for Philadelphia Community Projects, including $850K for Bringing the Future of Work to Disconnected Workers, with OIC as the intended recipient.

2024

OIC Philadelphia celebrates its 60th Anniversary, commemorating six decades of transforming lives and communities.
