Kevin R. Johnson, Ed.D., President and CEO


A visionary leader, believer, and builder, Dr. Kevin R. Johnson has over 20 years of executive leadership. Having earned his doctorate in Organizational Leadership from Columbia University, Kevin is a seasoned practitioner in transforming organizations into innovative, high-performing, fiscally-sound, and pioneering institutions.

As President & CEO of Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC) of Philadelphia, he has increased OIC’s hospitality job placement from low 60s to nearly 80 percent and developed a new vision to expand its workforce training to include: technology training, banking, energy, and construction. In 2016 OIC launched a coding boot camp, CODE OIC or (Creating Opportunities to Diversify Economy OIC), to create an employment pipeline for minority youth and young adults in the tech industry.

Committed to wholistic community development, Dr. Johnson is the founding Lead Pastor of Dare to Imagine Church, Inc., which has grown from 20 to nearly 500 since December 2014. Prior to his current positions, Kevin served as President & CEO of Bridge of Hope Community Development Corporation, and with The Goldenberg Group built a $100 million, 14-story student apartment tower for Temple University. He has delivered speeches in distinguished arenas including the largest Protestant church in the world, Yoido Full Gospel Church, Seoul, South Korea. Dr. Johnson was also the first African-American in 200-years to speak at Africa’s oldest Baptist church, Regent Road Baptist in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and later was inspired to raise funds, build, and establish a new church in West Africa—“Bright Hope Baptist Church in Moyamba, Sierra Leone.” Additionally, by invitation of the American Jewish Committee, Dr. Johnson traveled to Israel and Palestine and met government leaders to discuss the challenges that exist between the nations. An avid and respected writer, he is a frequent columnist for the oldest continually running African-American newspaper, The Philadelphia Tribune, and is heard every Sunday morning on WDAS-FM 105.3.

Currently, he is Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees of Lincoln University, and sits on the boards of Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, City of Philadelphia Workforce Steering Committee, PHL Diversity, the Forum for a Better Pennsylvania, and African American Leadership Forum. A recipient of numerous awards and citations, Newsweek featured him as one of the “up-and-coming” national post-Civil Rights ministers, The Philadelphia Tribune identified him as a “mover-and-shaker” in the City, and Morehouse College inducted him into the prestigious Board of Preachers. Dr. Johnson has been a guest on CNN, NBC, MSNBC, ABC, FOX NEWS, and other national media. He is member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (Alpha Boulé), and lifetime membership in the Morehouse College National Alumni Association.

A Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude graduate of Morehouse College, Dr. Johnson was awarded the Martin Luther King Jr. and Oprah Winfrey scholarships. He earned a Master of Divinity degree as a Union Scholar from Union Theological Seminary, and later earned the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in Organizational Leadership and Transformational Learning from Columbia University.

He is married to Mrs. Kimya S. P. Johnson, Esq., Director of Diversity, Inclusion & Pro Bono a labor and employment attorney at the law firm of Cozen O’Connor. They are Philadelphia residents and are proud parents of their son and two daughters.

Chalie Schmidt, Chef Instructor, Opportunities Inn. Chalie has been involved in the food industry as a Culinary Arts Educator, Corporate Chef, Adjunct Professor, Consultant, Chef and Catering Professional for the past twenty-seven years.

For the past twenty years, Chalie has been the Chef Instructor for the Opportunities Inn Program at Philadelphia OIC. He is responsible for educating students in the field of Culinary Arts and ultimately placing those students in upscale restaurants and hotels in the Philadelphia region. Chef also manages all catering functions on and off site. Additionally, from September 2002 through December 2007, Chef served as an Adjunct Professor for Temple University’s School of Tourism and Hospitality Management. In this role, Chalie introduced future industry managers to the world of Culinary Arts, wine appreciation, and food and beverage management practices.

In addition to his teaching duties, Chef regularly participates in Philadelphia’s many food shows in both a support and featured chef role. Notable involvements include Stage Manager for the annual Book and the Cook event, partnering with 9th Street Butcher, Sonny D’Angelo, in an elaborate 7 course all game meats dinner at the Fleisher Art Museum and cooking demonstrations at Reading Terminal’s Philadelphia Kitchen, and the Great Chefs Marathon. Chalie also worked as the Corporate Chef and food demonstrator for Alouette Brand cheese. Chef and his students recently won Best Dish at the Red Cross Red Ball for their presentation of Scallops Bellini with Truffle Cream.

Chalie’s long time friendship with Master Chef of France, Philippe Chin has led him on an exciting series of cooking Sojourns events including 3 different sold-out dinners at the venerable James Beard House in Lower Manhattan and an 8 course dinner held at Brasserie 8 1/2 in Manhattan by International Star Chef Alain Ducasse as a fundraiser for the late, great Chef Louis Palladin.

When Chef Chin moved down south, Chalie continued to work with him as often as possible including 3 years at the historically significant Partridge Inn cooking for the stampede of travelers attending the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, GA. Most recently, Chalie supported Chef Chin’s kitchen effort at the Charleston, S.C. Food and Wine Festival.

Prior to OIC, Chalie held various positions at the Cherry Hill Inn, Korman Suites Hotel, and Upstares at Varalli. Chalie is a graduate of the Philadelphia Restaurant School in Philadelphia, PA, attended the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia, PA and Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA.
